What is a Vinyasa, anyway?

A Vinyasa is sometimes cued in a yoga class and peppered between poses. But what does it mean? This blog is here to explain.

A Vinyasa is some of the postures from a sun-salutation; namely, Chaturangha, Upward Facing Dog and Downward Facing Dog.

It's normally practiced after a sequence on one side of the body, to realign the body and mind before moving to the other side, helping the body absorb the information from the first side and clear out any misalignment.

Vinyasas keep the body warm and loose, protecting the muscles and ligaments and making it easier to breathe more expansively. When we feel overheated or tired, we can opt out of the Vinyasas. As always - your body knows best.

The benefit of including a Vinyasa is that it enables you to really connect with the rhythm of breath-body connection. It provides a union between you, your attention, and your actions. Which is the real purpose of yoga!
